Wow what a game - top football, fantastic atmosphere and we beat the scum 5-1. There's been a lot of singing in the streets after matches lately, and after this match a bloke on Park lane was dancing on his window ledge playing Chas n Dave (or maybe it was Glory Glory, can't remember) at top volume to an appreciative audience. Can't wait to go to Wembley.
This is also amusing me quite a bit. |

I'm selling off a load of stuff very cheaply at this jumble sale today. Please come along! It's a nice social event as well as bargain hunt, with homemade cakes and a bar.
Pass it on...

I went to buy a bra yesterday, thinking I knew what I was doing. A bossy French woman in the fitting rooms told me I had the wrong size and the wrong styles. She took away the bra's I'd picked and brought me one of them in a different size, and two completely different ones. She didn't let me try the other bra I'd picked. She pointed out all the things wrong with the bra I came in wearing, and instructed me as I put on the new ones. "Sccop and sweep!" she demanded. So I did. And dammit the woman was right about those other bras. |

Goodbye Martin Jol. A great bloke but sadly he had to go after terrible results. That last match had the weirdest atmosphere I've experienced. Even weirder than coming back to draw after being 4-1 down on 125 anniversary night with all the flag waving and numb feeling inside. The game against Getafe was a mess, and in the stands we were barely following it as people got word from their mobiles and rumours spread like wildfire. After half time, the songs for Martin Jol got louder, there were several rounds of 'Stand up for Martin Jol' with spontaneous outbreaks of standing ovations. We all knew he was gone, and were glad to have the chance to respect the guy. The boos at the end were for some of the players and probably the board. We care a lot about Tottenham Hotspur, and it makes people angry when their deep-felt loyalty is rewarded by petulance and monumental mishandling of our club.
Welcome Juande Ramos. Can't say I immediately warm to someone who ditches his team mid-season when he has sworn a solemn promise that he'd stay till the summer, but I think this is the right move for us and maybe now our season can start. Hopefully his apparent tactical ability will make up for what he lacks in ethics. It really is just all about the money now. I hope Sevilla cope ok without him, they remind me of Spurs. |

cooeee Sweet old dears call this out when trying to attract someone's attention. It makes me and luckysaddle chortle uncontrollably, but we love it. I'll start doing it someday, completely without irony.
populuxe So modern, so stylish! The 1950s was the future. I'm a bit less obsessed with atomic age design than I was 10 years ago, but it's still there in a dustsheet-covered cardboard box at the back of my brain. And I'll probably always be a bit of a sucker for things with multi-coloured moleculesque blobs on. It's just that I don't feel life is incomplete without boomerang formica worktops anymore.
sara fanelli I love her illustration work, full of whimsy and perfect for kids books. Her collage style looks pretty surreal and she seems to have a lot of freedom, often using splashy painting and scribbled drawing. Her Pinocchio book is beautiful.
extreme sugar art Can't resist old cookbooks about over-fancy iced decoration, even though I know I'll never master their intricate latticework fans. Cakes not really meant for eating - how could it be?
los dias de muertos Never been to Mexico, but along with everyone else I have a weakness for paper cut-out banners, tin ornaments and cheery sugar skulls. I like the idea of making a big fuss of the dead on a special day, rather than on a death anniversary. Not something I'm expecting to fall out of love with just yet.
eric ravilious The Imperial War Museum had a big Ravilious show in 2003, which was complete eye candy for me (especially the submarine print series), but had an annoying effect of inflating the price of his gorgeous stone litho-illustrated book 'High Street' to well beyond my price range. I've had my mitts on a copy twice and had trouble not drooling on it, so maybe it's better off out of my reach. This is the book I would most like to own, and if you know me, you know I like beautiful illustrated books more than pretty much anything. I'll have to content myself with drinking tea from his lovely alphabet mug, and going to see his textural watercolours of East Sussex in The Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne.
tom d I can't remember where I first saw this self-taught guy's paintings. They're done on old scrap wood, using cheap paints, and feature superb cartoony wild wimmin with talon nails, tigers, bears, birds etc. I bought 'Girls in Town', 'Bear Girl' and 'Tiger Town' from Yard Dog gallery. Some of them have scribbled text on the back. Tom D's art cheers me up - as does his signature 'paint by tom d'. |

| Books |
[Oct. 5th, 2007|09:34 am] |
The two books that I've illustrated for Harper Collins were published this week.
'Tigger on the Couch: The Neuroses, Psychoses, Maladies and Disorders of Our Favourite Children's Characters', is a paperback. It's also coming out in Germany. |
'Red Undies and Dutchman's Trousers: Naughty Plants for All Occasions', is a hardback full of innuendo-laden gardening advice, with seven big 2-colour illustrations inside plus the cover and jacket motifs. This was my first grapple with watercolour, and it was lots of fun. |
Also on the topic of books, it's the Small Publishers Fair next week and I'll be there with some of my Gocco prints and books. Friday 12th and Saturday 13th October. 11am - 7pm, free entry Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, Holborn tube |

| Wasabi |
[Aug. 16th, 2007|11:22 am] |
The other day, someone who sits by my desk saw me arrive in the office and said hello. The next thing she said was "I must get some wasabi peas". Occasionally I feed them to her over the desk divider, and it made me laugh to think that these tasty things are now hotwired in her brain in an association with me. I wonder what other Pavlovian thoughts of random objects or foodstuffs pop in to peoples heads when they see me.
In other food news, I am hopelessly addicted to cheung fun, and spend a lot of time thinking about it. |

| Musical |
[Jul. 19th, 2007|12:28 pm] |
The Grey Gardens musical closes in NY this month and is coming to London - I really want to go see it. A friend just went to the Broadway production & gives it the thumbs up. There was a funny article in the Observer magazine recently about the film & musical, claiming that fashion houses like Prada etc. had taken Little Edie's look (ugh, they showed hideous shiny Prada turbans - not even made out of brooch-pinned jumpers).
Anyone else want to go to this when it arrives? |

| Rise |
[Jul. 15th, 2007|11:42 am] |
The Skatalites and Kelis are playing in the park at the end of my road for free today, and I didn't even realise until last night. This makes me happy, and reminds me that I live in a great place + need to pay more attention.
It's an anti-racism festival called Rise put on by the mayor and I can hear them sound checking. I'm going to wander up there later, eat some food, go to watch some comedy, listen to some music. Looks like a nice Sunday afternoon lined up, and there's no sign of the heavy rain, yet. Ah whatever, I have an umbrella. |

I had a colonoscopy yesterday, something I dread for weeks beforehand. Just so you're warned - this is a long post involving extensive nasty talk about my innards and ugly medical procedures. It does have a very happy ending though.

| Eat |
[Apr. 28th, 2007|12:52 am] |
There's a totally random and mental event in Trafalgar Square today Saturday from 12.30. Eat London involves a big procession ending in the plonking down of a London map, made of food. Yes lucky London people, you will get to eat the savoury spring roll columns of Selfridges, or bits of Barfi Marble Arch, Tate Modern sticky flapjack bricks with icing on top etc. Go, see, eat & believe... just don't ask me why.
That should get me in the mood nicely for my date with Miffy. |

| Planetarium |
[Feb. 24th, 2007|11:38 am] |
Wah! I've been meaning to go to the London Planetarium for ages, but not quite got around to it. The huge queue of tourists for Tussauds wax museum was off putting and I wasn't sure if you could buy a ticket just for the Planetarium. But I had an idea that I'd go along one quiet midweek day, along with a visit to Regents Park maybe, and be transported to the stars. But now I find out it's gone, shame on me. Well the beautiful 1950s building is still there, but it is a planetarium no more. Rather than being swamped with tourists, virtually no-one was going at all anymore! 300 seater planetarium - empty. Last year they changed it into the 'Stardome', which shows a celebrity (star geddit) animation made by the Wallace & Gromit team. Sigh. They let people in for free for a week before it closed.
In better news, a new planetarium has been built in Greenwich, at the Royal Observatory. It's due to open in May and sounds pretty good. Nice excuse to go to Observatory Hill anyway - you get a good view of London from there. |

The Landmark Trust is having a raffle to raise funds for the restoration of historic buildings. There are prizes of £300 - 3000 to spend on Landmark holidays. You could rent that mental looking Pineapple house in Scotland, or loads of other eccentric pavilions, towers, follies, gatehouses, castles, temples or forts. Go on, it only costs a quid a ticket. |

| Music |
[Jan. 4th, 2007|07:29 pm] |
The familiar tune from Lily Allen's Littlest Things single was driving me mad, until I found out the surprising source - it's similar to Cat Stevens' Wild World. I got her Alright, Still CD for xmas - twice actually, as luckysaddle's sister bought wishlist stuff from HMV when Amazon let her down. I'm fond of Lily Allen despite her dad, she hits the nail on the head with her lyrics pretty often. That one about telling idiots getting in your face to get lost makes me laugh. Same with a lot of Lady Sovereign. Loudmouth girls who like taking the piss are always going to attract a lot of haters / people criticising them for not being real enough blah blah.
At the football a few weeks back I heard there'd been a Cheryl Tweedy chant and mistakenly assumed it was to the tune of Lily Allen's tongue-in-cheek "I wish my life was a little less seedy, Why am I always so greedy? Wish I looked just like Cheryl Tweedy, I know I never will, I know I never will". But nah, it was just something to diss Ashley Cole. Shame. ( more music stuff ) |
